Day 19!
Today I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about vegan bakeries that refrain from using the word “vegan”. The message of the piece was: despite the fact that vegan baked goods are wowing judges at food competitions, people are still afraid to try vegan treats.
Fine. Mission accepted.
Today’s gift is all about consciousness raising. As ambassadors of compassion I encourage you all to take your friends (especially those you may be afraid of the word “vegan”) out for the most fabulous vegan dessert of their lives. In Toronto I would suggest picking something up created by: LPK Culinary Groove; Bunner’s Bake Shop; Live Food Bar; Apiecalypse Now!; Cakes By Jill; Bloomers’ Bakery; Kind Food; Earth and City or Live On Chocolate.

Because this is some serious sweet seduction.
The scent of cinnamon draws people in.
The endless topping buffet indirectly demonstrates the abundance of cruelty-free options.
Who’s going to be thinking about egg wash when they are admiring a s’more cinnamon roll?
I can’t imagine anyone being afraid of caramel, chocolate chips, and almond slivers.
But if they are, they can stick with what’s familiar – cinnamon, sugar, flour and yeast.

I only needed a tiny bite to be reminded of what wonderful, indulgent, plant-based delights are possible.

After all the awe-inspiring eats, to achieve your baketivism badge you must make the connection. The people you love deserve to know that it is possible to live a happy and fulfilling life (that includes cinnamon buns) without contributing to animal cruelty and exploitation.
As they are licking their lips to savour that last taste of frosting, just say, “Aren’t vegan desserts amazing?”
We need to decrease the fear factor, because we know that veganism is better for the health of people, the lives of animals and the future of our planet. What a gift.
